How to create a Wi-Fi QR code

  1. Enter your network name (SSID) exactly as it appears in your Wi-Fi list — it is case-sensitive.
  2. Select the security type. For almost all home and office routers this is WPA/WPA2/WPA3.
  3. Enter the Wi-Fi password, or click Generate a strong Wi-Fi password if you are setting a new one (then save it in your router too).
  4. Tick Hidden network if your router does not broadcast its name.
  5. Download the QR code as PNG or SVG, or click Print for a clean page with just the code and network name.

How guests scan it

  • iPhone and iPad (iOS 11+): open the Camera app, point it at the code and tap the “Join network” banner.
  • Android (10+): open the Camera app or Google Lens, or go to Wi-Fi settings and tap the QR icon next to “Add network”.
  • Windows 11 and many smart TVs can also join from a QR code via their camera or companion app.

What is inside a Wi-Fi QR code?

The code contains plain text in a standard format that phone operating systems recognise:

WIFI:T:WPA;S:MyNetwork;P:my-password;;

T is the security type, S the network name, P the password and H:true marks a hidden network. Special characters ( ; , : ") are escaped automatically, and non-English network names are encoded as UTF-8.

Privacy and security

  • The QR code is generated in your browser. The SSID and password are never uploaded, and the code works forever without any online service — it is not a “dynamic” QR that can expire or track scans.
  • Anyone who can see the code can join your network. Display it where only welcome guests can scan it, and consider a separate guest network.
  • If you change your Wi-Fi password, create a new QR code.

Ideas for using your Wi-Fi QR code

Frame it in a guest room or holiday rental, add it to a café table tent or restaurant menu, include it in an office welcome pack, or stick it inside a kitchen cupboard for visiting family.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to make a QR code for my Wi-Fi?

Yes, as long as you only show it to people you would give the password to. The code is generated locally — your password is not uploaded anywhere.

Does the Wi-Fi QR code expire?

No. It contains your network details directly, not a link to an online service, so it works until you change your network name or password.

Can I make a QR code for a network without a password?

Yes. Choose “None (open network)” as the security type. Guests can scan it to join the open network directly.

Why doesn’t my phone connect after scanning?

Check that the network name matches exactly (including capital letters), that the password is correct, and that the right security type is selected. For hidden networks, tick “Hidden network”.

Can I print the QR code?

Yes. Click Print for a page that shows only the code and the network name, or download a high-resolution PNG or a scalable SVG for your own designs.
