A random 14-character password is a common corporate-policy minimum with comfortable headroom. With all 94 printable characters it has about 92 bits of entropy. Use the generator above — it opens at 14 characters, and you can still adjust the length if a site needs something different.

Where the 14-character requirement comes from

Fourteen characters has long been the maximum minimum-length value that Windows Group Policy could enforce, so many Active Directory environments, CIS benchmarks and audit checklists settled on “minimum 14 characters”. Newer Windows versions can enforce longer minimums, but 14 remains the number written into countless existing policies.

A random 14-character password reaches about 92 bits of entropy with the full character set — far beyond brute-force range. That makes it a great choice for work accounts, VPNs and admin consoles where policies require it.

    Tips for work accounts

    • Store it in your company’s approved password manager.
    • Use a passphrase instead if you must type it at the Windows login screen every day.
    • Never reuse a work password for personal accounts.

How strong is a 14-character password?

The table shows how many different 14-character passwords exist for each character set, and how long an offline attacker testing 100 billion guesses per second (a multi-GPU rig against a fast hash such as MD5 or NTLM) would need on average to find a randomly generated one.

Strength of a random 14-character password by character set
Character setPossible passwordsEntropyAverage time to crack
    Numbers only (0–9)1.0 × 101447 bitsabout 8 minutes
    Lowercase letters6.5 × 101966 bitsabout 10 years
    Letters (A–Z, a–z)1.1 × 102480 bitsabout 167,461 years
    Letters + numbers1.2 × 102583 bitsabout 2.0 million years
    All printable characters4.2 × 102792 bitsabout 666 million years

These figures assume the password is truly random. A 14-character password built from a word, a name or a date can be cracked in a tiny fraction of this time. Check any password with the strength checker.

    Frequently asked questions

Why do companies require 14-character passwords?

Many policies follow Windows Group Policy and CIS benchmark recommendations, where 14 characters is a widely used minimum length for domain accounts.

Is a 14-character password hard to crack?

A random one is. With all character types it has roughly 92 bits of entropy — billions of years of brute force at current GPU speeds.
